Storm and Flood Awareness

Storms in Bayside can bring heavy rain, flash flooding, hail, lightning, and strong winds. Low‑lying and coastal areas are more at risk of flooding

Sydney’s storm season usually runs from October to March. This is the key time to make sure your home and household are prepared.

Four key tips to keep in mind during the flooding season

Stay Informed

  • Listen to weather updates and flood warnings via local radio or the Hazards Near Me App
  • Check the NSW SES website for local alerts
  • Download the BoM App for real time-flood warnings

Prepare Your Home

  • Pack an emergency kit with essentials. Learn how to prepare an emergency kit.
  • Know your local flood evacuation routes.
  • Secure outdoor furniture and loose items.
  • Clean gutters and downpipes to prevent overflow.
  • Move valuables and electrical items above floor level if flooding is likely.
  • Click to download our Storm Season Checklist

Avoid Hazards

  • Never walk, ride or drive through floodwaters.
  • Avoid stormwater drains and fast-moving water.
  • Stay indoors during lightning and strong winds
  • Keep children and pets away from flooded areas.
  • Report fallen power lines to Ausgrid.

After the Storm

  • Don’t return home until authorities say it's safe.
  • Avoid using electrical appliances until checked.
  • Clean and disinfect your home to prevent illness.
  • Check on neighbours, especially the elderly or vulnerable.
  • Take photos of any damage for insurance claims.
  • Contact Council for fallen trees.
