Food Organics (FO) Service for Businesses
A new food organics (FO) collection service is now available for businesses located within the Bayside Council LGA. This service helps businesses separate food waste from general waste, reducing landfill and improving environmental outcomes.
New NSW Government legislation is introducing a staged approach that will require certain businesses to separate their food organics from general waste over the coming years.
This requirement generally applies to businesses with weekly general waste volumes of approximately:
- 16 or more 240L bins, or
- 6 or more 660L bins, or
- an equivalent combination.
The NSW Government mandate will be introduced in stages:
- Stage 1 (1 July 2026): 3,960L+ per week
- Stage 2 (1 July 2028): 1,980L+ per week
- Stage 3 (1 July 2030): 720L+ per week
To find out the exact requirements for your business, or to use the online FOGO Business Mandate Calculator, visit the ‘Business Food Waste’ page on the NSW EPA website here.
All businesses are eligible to start a food organics collection service now.

Commercial Waste Guidelines
All commercial properties are required to follow waste guidelines, regardless of who provides your waste service.
Keep your bins on your property, keep them tidy and accessible, and make sure everything goes inside the right bin with the lid closed.
Why separate food organics?
Separating food organics from general waste has a range of benefits for your business and the environment:
- Reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill
- Reduces greenhouse gas emissions
- Improves resource recovery by turning food waste into compost and other valuable products
- Support local processing and reduces reliance on imported chemically manufactured fertilisers
- Cost savings for your business if you’re able to reduce your general waste (red) bin allocation.
