Splinter Orchestra
About us
One of the few groups of its kind anywhere else in the world, Splinter was formed in 2002, currently comprises 30+ members and brings together musickin from various backgrounds to co-create on equal terms – without leaders, composers, or conductors.
The ensemble embraces an inclusive, democratic and gender equal approach, encouraging non-hierarchical collaboration through improvisation. This spirit of respect and reciprocity extends beyond the group itself, recognising connections with non-human musickin and Place.
Each Splinter iteration creates a creative ecology where individual musickin can explore expression, connection and collaboration in unconventional ways.
The ensemble meets weekly to play, move, create music, record, discuss and ngara — a Dharug word meaning to listen, hear and think.
