Lost Animals

There are multiple actions you can take to recover your lost pet, or if you come across a lost pet.

If your pet is lost and is microchipped, Council’s Animal Management Officer will attempt to contact you when your pet is found and return them directly to your home. If you cannot be reached, your pet will be impounded and taken to the Blacktown Animal Rehoming Centre.

To check if your missing cat or dog has been collected, please contact Council on 1300 581 299.

You can also contact your local veterinary clinics, as pets are often handed in there.

What to Do If You Find a Lost Dog

If you come across a lost dog:

  • Check if the dog is friendly and approachable.
  • Look for an identification tag - if the dog is wearing one, contact the owner directly.
  • Take the dog to a local vet to check for a microchip.
  • Ask neighbours if they recognise the dog or know its owner.
  • If you’re unable to find the owner within a reasonable time, please contact Council’s Customer Service Centre on 1300 581 299 to request a Ranger.
  • Council’s Animal Management Officer will collect the dog and scan it for a microchip to help reunite it with its owner.

If the dog shows signs of aggression or poses a risk to public safety, do not approach it. Contact Council immediately on 1300 581 299.

Council Rangers aim to return lost pets to their owners as quickly as possible. Impounding is considered a last resort.

What to Do If You’ve Lost Your Pet

  • Ensure your microchip details are up to date on the NSW Pet Registry.
  • If you can’t access the registry, contact Council on 1300 581 299 to check or update your information.
  • Call your local vet to check if someone has handed your pet in.
