Power outages can occur during, storms, heatwaves or due to infrastructure faults. Being prepared helps reduce inconvenience and risk.
Four key tips to keep in mind during power outages and infrastructure disruptions
Before a power outage
- Know what items in your home rely on electricity.
- Keep mobile phones charged.
- Have a torch and plenty of batteries.
- Have a battery-operated radio so you can listen for updates.
- If someone in your household relies on electricity-powered medical equipment (e.g. oxygen concentrators, dialysis, etc), register with Ausgrid’s Life Support Register. They can provide electricity for your household during outages.
During a power outage
- Don’t use a gas oven to heat your home.
- Unplug electrical appliances.
- If the power is out for more than 4 hours food in the fridge can spoil. Keep the fridge closed as much as possible.
- Be aware of fallen powerlines if you go outside.
- Keep a single light on so you know when power has been restored.
Report and stay updated
- Report outages to Ausgrid.
- Monitor weather risks via the BoM app
Check on Others
- Help neighbours who rely on medical equipment.
