Council has agreed to explore the possibility of dual naming for Barton Park, in accordance with the Geographical Names Board of NSW (GNB) Dual Naming Policy.
This will involve engaging with the Bayside Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) Working Group and the Local Aboriginal Land Council to determine whether the Barton Park area has an existing Aboriginal name that meets the GNB criteria.
The investigation will include gathering historical, oral, or documentary evidence of an Aboriginal name for the area, including its form, meaning, origin, and use, and assess whether appropriate cultural authority can be established to support its recognition.
The RAP Working Group will report back to Council on their investigations and whether a
formal submission will be made to the GNB.
