This year marks the tenth anniversary of The Honourable Shaoquett Moselmane, former Councillor and Emeritus Mayor of Rockdale, entering the NSW Parliament as a Member of the Legislative Council.
Shaoquett, a local resident, was the first Australian of Arabic-Lebanese-Muslim background to enter Australia’s oldest Parliament.
Spurred on by his commitment to social justice and to giving all Australians a ‘fair go’ regardless of race, colour or creed, Shaoquett began his political career in Rockdale.
He was elected as a Councillor in 1995, and he was elected as Mayor on four separate occasions.
Shaoquett’s dedication to a fair and just multicultural society is evident in his achievements.
He established the Multicultural and Indigenous Media Awards, which recognises outstanding multicultural and Indigenous media and journalists across Australia.
He also established the Kids-on-Wheels Alliance, a registered charity which manufactures and globally distributes wheelchairs for children living with a disability.
Bayside Council congratulates Shaoquett for his ten years in the NSW Parliament and thanks him for his ongoing commitment to our local area and our residents.
