Bayside Council congratulates Councillor Joe Awada on being elected unopposed Mayor of Bayside Council at the Extraordinary Council Meeting on Wednesday 25 September 2019.
There were two nominations for Deputy Mayor, Councillor James Macdonald and Councillor Christina Curry, each receiving seven votes.
Councillor James Macdonald was elected Deputy Mayor out of the hat.
Mayor Awada and Deputy Mayor Macdonald will both retain the roles until Local Government Elections in September 2020.
“I am honoured to be elected to serve as Mayor of Bayside Council,” Mayor Awada said.
Mayor Awada, in accepting the nomination, said it was an honour and privilege to be elected to lead the Council for the next 12 months and he was looking forward to representing all of Bayside.
“I will give it my all,” Mayor Awada said.
“We amalgamated in 2016. I don’t think of it as an amalgamation but rather the combining of two great cities."
“We have delivered some great outcomes and we will continue to do so. There are already many significant projects underway and I am looking forward to seeing them through to completion.”
Mayor Awada also paid tribute to outgoing Mayor Councillor Bill Saravinovski, thanking him for his strong leadership and support over the years.
“I want to thank all my fellow councillors for the tremendous support I have received,” he said.
Mayor Awada said that despite the Council being made up of different parties he was proud of the fact that they all respected each other and worked together to deliver great outcomes for Bayside.
All Councillors will continue in their roles until Local Government Elections in September 2020.
